2016 Balanced Nutrition Workshop Final Declaration:

“NUTRITION EDUCATION SHOULD START IN EARLY CHILDHOOD”

The significance of adequate and balanced nutrition, as well as physical activity for a healthy life is indisputable. We must sow the seeds of nutrition education at an early age in order to make positive lifestyle habits permanent and in order to raise healthy generations. Proposals, guidelines and strategies continue to be developed both in our country and around the world.

The Childhood Overweight and Obesity Prevention Council, commissioned by the WHO, has prepared a report emphasizing the importance of cooperation between legislators, NGOs, universities, scientists and industry as a whole.

We at the Sabri Ülker Food Research Foundation aspire to create awareness of the importance of adequate and balanced nutrition as well as physical activity during childhood. This has been the theme of the “Balanced Nutrition Workshop,” which has been organized together with the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) and Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek (TNO). In order to raise awareness, we now invite all stakeholders, NGOs, government agencies, scientists and universities to do the following:

Actively take part in our campaign to enhance nutrition education in schools by making use of the available materials and information. Include this subject in the curriculum, emphasising the necessity of forming adequate and balanced nutrition habits at a young age; this reflects the saying, “A twig is bent while it is green;”
Contribute to raising awareness about not using food as a restraining, penalizing or rewarding element as this can undermine the development of adequate and balanced nutrition habits;
Lead the implementation, monitoring, measurement and evaluation of nutrition and healthy living support programmes that will be included in educational materials in order to ensure that they are optimum from a scientific perspective;
Take part in teaching children the importance of being physically active as well as of having a balanced nutrition, and increase the number of educational and entertaining lessons to increase physical activity;
Create relevant and easy to understand communication tools to enable parents and children to receive and act upon objective and balanced scientific information on food and nutrition.

By implementing these points we will inform the public and thus improve public health.
